YOUR ROLE IN THE JUDICIAL PROCESS

This advanced course is an intense, hands-on learning experience. Participants are provided with pre-course reading materials on a mock child abuse investigation case. Once the course begins, students watch a forensic interview that was conducted by an experienced forensic interviewer with a professional actor. Participants then participate in a mock MDT meeting to discuss the various investigative and child protective factors associated with the case. Participants process information revealed during the forensic interview and identify any potential challenges to the interview that might be posed during legal proceedings. Discussion also takes place regarding the investigative and protective information that has been collected and what additional investigative steps should be taken as the case moves forward. Participants also explore various factors related to the prosecution of the case.

Faculty members then provide lectures to instruct the participants on the various judicial proceedings that may take place if the case is accepted for prosecution. A mock trial featuring the faculty as the testifying witnesses then takes place to illustrate how the case would likely be presented to a jury and the direct and cross-examination questions that would likely be posed to the witnesses.

Following the faculty mock trial, the students then “take the stand” and provide testimony as witnesses in their respective roles. Following each participant’s testimony, faculty and peers provide constructive feedback regarding the testimony.

Students must have completed ChildFirst, Finding Words or a nationally recognized forensic interview training prior to applying for this course.

Students must be present for the entire training session
